Location Feature Article #2

The first thing you have to do when traveling is figuring out where you want to stay how much it will cost per night and what type of place you want to stay at. While I am in France I will be staying in the Trianon Palace Versailles, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel which will cost two hundred at seventy-six dollars a night. I picked this hotel because this hotel is near all the places I want to see while visiting France but I only plan on staying here for about three to four days and then going to stay at the Holiday Inn Paris – Notre Dame because the Eiffel Tower is near there. After spending the rest of the week in France I will then go to Italy and stay at the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria which is three hundred and eighty three dollars. I would want to stay here for a few nights because it has a beautiful view as well as good restaurants nearby. After staying there for a few nights I will then go to the Hilton Molino Stucky Venice because of the nice tourist attractions and different activities they have. After that I will then go to Ireland to finish my travels. I would first spend two nights in the The Shelbourne Dublin, A Renaissance Hotel which is about two hundred and thirty-seven dollars. I picked this hotel because its near the sight I want to see. I would then go to the The Ross Hotel in Killarney because my family lives over there and I would want to see where my grandmother grew up where she lived and where she went to school. Another thing I plan on doing is going to restaurants and seeing the different types of food they serve. In France I plan on going to the Restaurant La Tour, Le Carré aux Crêpes, and Le Shandrani. I picked these restaurants because they were highly recommended when going to France. Italy is also known for having good food so going to restaurants there are a must. So I deciding to go to Al Covo, Paradiso Perduto, and Da Mamo. These restaurants are on my to go to list because it’s not just the food but they also have live music, and other performances while you are there. When I go to Ireland I am going to go to Gallaghers Boxty House, Roly’s Bistro, Bricin Restaurant and Boxty House are the restaurants I want to go to while staying in Ireland. The food in the countries I am visiting is different for example while I am in France I am going to get a Crepes, and of course in Italy you have to try their pasta and pizza and then in Ireland there corn beef, Irish soda bread and there potato pancakes which are called Boxty. Finding my way around is going to hard and finding the right places to eat are going to be difficult but of course it is going to be worth it in the end.

Location Feature #1

Many people love traveling, and to see the different types of places there are. The places I am traveling to are Italy, France and Ireland. All these places I am going to see have many beautiful sites to see. The first thing I would do while I am in France is go to the Versailles and Giverny Day trip which is two hundred and fifteen dollars. This day trip is Monet’s garden at Giverny and Louis XIV’s palace of Versailles. The full-day tour combines the two most popular excursions from Paris in one trip. You’ll explore France’s royal history at the incomparably grand Versailles palace and see the gardens that inspired so many of Claude Monet’s masterpieces at Giverny.  While on the tour I would stop at the  for lunch at the Moulin de Fourges, a picturesque mill on the banks of the Epte River. I would want to visit these places because I don’t really know anything about France so having a tour guide to show me around would make the trip much more enjoyable. Another thing I would do in France is the Paris City Segway Tour which cost seventy dollars, and you go through the parks and sidewalks of Paris while receiving a great orientation, informative historical and current-day information, heaps of unique and fascinating stories, great photo opportunities and superb personal service from your guide. One of the first things I would want to do when I got to Italy is the Gondola Ride and original Venice Walking Tour the price of this is thirty eight euros. For this specific activity you start off on the Gondola ride and then will start the walking through the streets in the most famous landmarks including St Mark’s Square, the Basilica and the Doge’s Palace. One of the last things I would do while in Italy is go to a Concert. The cost of this is forty-four euros. It is a traditional Italian-styled evening of delicious Tuscan cuisine and a concert of celebrated Italian opera songs in the heart of historic Florence. I picked these places to see because it gives me an idea on how the Italian culture really is. The last place I will be visiting is Ireland. I would first do the Blarney Castle and Garden Day Trip which will cost sixty-five dollars. I would go here because you get to see the top three attractions in Dublin, Ireland this beautiful medieval castle is home to one of Ireland’s best loved treasures – the fascinating Blarney Stone, which sits at the top of the castle’s tower. According to legend, kissing the stone bestows the kisser with the “gift of the gab,”.  One of the last places I would go to is the National Museum of Ireland. Which cost about thirty-eight dollars. Being able to see all these wonderful places is definitely something I will not forget.

Backpacking Route.

I decided to travel to a few places which are France, Italy, and Ireland. I would first spend one week in France and of course see the Eiffel tower and many of the tourist attractions such as The Notre Dame de Paris, The Louvre which is a landmark art museum with a vast amount of artwork and last but not least got to the Disneyland Paris. France is a place I always wanted to go to because it is such a beautiful place and it also has many beautiful sites you can see. After I finish seeing everything there I will then go to Italy and spend a week there. While I am there I would go to see the Colosseum, as well as the Trevi Fountain, and last but not least go and see the many museums that are in Italy.  Italy is definitely on my list because there are so many museums and just the different types of foods. The last place I want to go to is Ireland, I always wanted to visit there ever since i was a kid. My grandparents are from there and they say it is absolutely beautiful. I would first go to Killarney, Ireland because that is where my family is from and I would want to see where they lived and the farms they had. Another place to visit is Glendalough, Co. Wicklow which has a lot of historic history to it. Ending my trip I would finish in Dublin, Ireland to see the rest of my family living there.

Packing for a unforgettable trip

An unforgettable trip first to France, than Italy and ending in Ireland. The type of suitcases I would need would be two twenty-nine inch bags because it is a three week trip I would need many things. Such as deodorant, clothes to at least last me through the week, money for the right currency depending on the country I  am in, as well as a travel toothbrush and travel toothpaste. I would also bring a camera to take pictures for memories. I would need all these things to save money and as well as not worry about finding the stores that would carry the things I need. Depending on the climates in these countries my clothes would vary, for example it’s always raining in Ireland so maybe I will bring rain boots. To be sure to have the right clothing for all types of weather I will bring different types of clothing such as short’s if it’s hot, a jacket in case it’s cold, and a raincoat in case it does rain. Money is definitely something important to bring when going on a trip especially one that is three weeks, when going to a different country you are going to need their currency because they don’t accept the US dollar. I would also want my own water bottle to make sure what I am drinking is clean and safe. Another thing to bring on this trip would a map of all the important locations located in the country I am in such as restaurants, museums, or any nice tourist attractions. One of the last things I would bring would be a dictionary for when I go to that certain country and don’t know the language and will be able to ask somebody for directions in case I am lost or need something. These are all the things I would need for my unforgettable trip.

International Political Cartoons

1357042_525_350_w

The artist of this political cartoon is Paresh, the country of origin is America. This political cartoon is making fun of how Hillary Clinton will do anything to win the election even if that means bribing people. Some techniques used are exaggeration if you look at the bus Hillary’s an endless amount of money coming out where her competitor doesn’t have any money coming out of their bus. The main point of this cartoon is to show how if you have a lot of money that’s almost a guarantee that you will win.

The artists of this political cartoon is Lianhe Zaobao it was made in Singapore. The message portrayed here is they want to give women some rights but not enough to do something with them. Exaggeration is being used as well because if you look at the women in the car she looks shocked and scared. The key point being used here is that even though the government says they gave them rights doesn’t necessarily say what kind or how much.

Political Cartoon

  1. Many things inspired this political cartoon. For example, you can’t put Merry Christmas on cups, and your not suppose to say Merry Christmas but rather Happy Holidays.
  2. No person or place is portrayed here but the image that I see here is that everything must be said a certain way so nobody gets offended.
  3. Exaggeration is being used in the cartoon because it shows how many things you can’t say because somebody will take offense to it in some way.
  4. The cartoonist’s perception on the conflict is it is ridiculous on the amount of topics you can’t talk about.
  5. It is not persuasive because it does not push you to believe a certain view or topic.
  6. In order to make the cartoon more persuasive the artists could of showed something that wasn’t creative because of people getting hurt and then something very creative and not tip-toeing around the subject.

Cruel Treatment In China

Beijing– Many people in China face many cruel treatments. A lawyer said he was tortured with a electric baton and spent 3 years in solitary confinement. In a exclusive interview he said “I thought about giving up and giving my life to my family.” They didn’t just inflict physical punishments on him but mental punishments as well. He also said that he was left in a 8 x 8 cell for 3 years and they installed a loudspeaker in his room and would send out propaganda on socialist values for 68 weeks straight. Despite all the cruel treatment he vowed to not leave China. Many questions have been asked concerning his current condition but no questions have been answered.

It’s without a doubt that China is a one party dictatorship. Anybody who decides to speak out against that will be penalized. Intimidation by local authorities takes place there daily.  Many of the people being tortured are civil right advocates and unionists. Some tortures they use are hitting, kicking and electric shocks. Other abuse consist of cigarette burns, suffocation, as well as stretching of one’s body parts. They wouldn’t just hurt you physically but they would refuse to give you your medicine that you need, or refuse medical care all together. The tortures take place in police stations, and as well as prisons. The lawyer that was tortured was tortured in and out of jail. A law in China can require people to work in camps for three years members of the ISHR said that over 1000 camps have been identified and four million people are said to be in them. Hundreds if not thousands of Chinese people have been victims of these cruel acts.  There has been many attempts to end the cruel tortures in China for example a journalist was trying to see the cruel treatments they faced but he said that government officials would try to restrict and impede his efforts on finding out any information.

China admits that it is common for police officers to force confessions out of people and aren’t punished for it. Maya Wang said “If police officers are penalized for torturing people they would think twice on doing it.” Some people are even saying that we learned a thing or two from China! One user even posted that “Those people who work in the justice system and created wrong cases are just as evil as terrorists.” Many people who get involved in the crimes or even speak out when they witness getting tortured are the ones who end up getting these bizarre charges against them. One example of that is Huugjilt, he heard someone crying and went to go investigate what was happening he then reported to the police on what he saw, he then was charged later with raping and murdering a woman. After hours of interrogation he confessed that he did it but after a few years doubt was raised when a serial killer came forward and told local law enforcement he was the one who did it. So an innocent man was in jail for about 9 years for a crime he never committed just because he spoke out.

Lawyers from across China told Amnesty international of the retribution they faced when they challenged local law enforcements. All they did was just point out that they should prevent tortures used to get confessions out of people. A mistake that they will never forget. One Chinese lawyer even said that “I was strapped to an iron chair, slapped in the face, kicked on my legs and hit so hard over the head with a plastic bottle filled with water that I passed out.” But the government claims that they have always encouraged and supported lawyers on performing their duties. Up to twelve lawyers are being held under residential surveillance in a designated location. Residential surveillance in a designated location is a law that was established in 2013 and anybody who was suspected of terrorism, major bribery, or state security offences would be held at an undisclosed location for up to six months. Despite several attempts since 2010 to end tortures under Chinese laws it’s been almost impossible. Still local law officials continue to pull strings in the justice system despite defense lawyer’s best efforts the tortures used are still ignored just because it’s “simply” a convenience. Amnesty International has been investigating the cases on the People’s court database, they found 590 cases in which allegations of torture were made but only 16 of them were actually investigated but ended up leading to nothing.

A campaign has been made and it’s called Stop Torture in Tibet. This campaign has found that Tibetan prisoners are still tortured but those who do actually afflict these cruel punishments are the one’s going unpunished. China claims that they have more restrictions placed to prevent cruel treatment but not for this man. Golog Jigme who was arrested for being involved in a film project. He said that they would hang him by his handcuffs so his feet would barely touch the floor and they would then beat him. They didn’t stop there though they would put him in a electric chair and begin sending shocks all over his body all because of a film project? China claims they stopped all tortures used but several people have come forward on what happened to them while they were in jail. People like Gongpo Thinley, Tenzin Namgyal, Kelsang Tsundue, and Tsering. The list could go on for forever. Even big campaign like this can’t fix something that is hundreds of years old. Many people have tried to end it and have gotten no where and anytime they are close the Chinese government puts a stop to it. But if everybody keeps pushing the Chinese government to make a change they will.

Thanksgiving

If you were to look up the meaning of Thanksgiving you would find many different meanings. Many people celebrate Thanksgiving in different ways such as Canada China and Korea. Many people view this holiday to be American when in reality it’s celebrated all over the world. But what all countries have in common is it’s a time to come together and just be thankful for everything you have whether it’s your family, or your health or all the above. With my family we all come together and have a big dinner and just talk about how our year went and everything we are thankful for. Somebody once said “Happiness isn’t about getting what you want all the time, it’s all about loving what you have and being grateful for it.”

In Canada Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second week of October. Although they celebrate it on a different day they still have the same type of food such as turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, and cranberry sauce. They also have parades in Canada, even though they aren’t as common like they are here in America. Canadians still get the 3 day weekend but they call it autumn brake. Another difference between the two holidays is theirs is on a Monday and ours are on a Thursday.

As you can see many people celebrate holidays in numerous ways. But we all come together to appreciate everything we have in our lives. Another quote is ” Life is full of give and take, and take nothing for granted.” This quote represents being thankful because everybody always wants and nobody wants to give. And at the end of the day your not grateful for the stuff you have you always want more. Therefore Thanksgiving is a great holiday to come together and just forget about all the stuff going on and appreciate everything that has gone right.

Girl Forced To Marry 70 Year Old Man

Ministry of Justice and Human Rights

Avenue de I’Independance

Ouagadougou 01 BP 526

Burkina Faso

Dear Justice and Human Rights Minister,

I’m writing this letter to express my concern about the young girl who was forced into marrying a 70 year old man. Although love is a great thing it should not be forced on somebody.

With all due respect you should terminate the marriage between the young girl and older man. At least ask her if she wanted to marry him.

I call on you to investigate this matter. Not only was the girl forced to do something she had no say in but you don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors. There is also an obligation set in the country to prevent forced marriages. So if you would take some time out of busy day to investigate this matter it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for taking time out of your day to read this letter about this important subject.

Sincerely,

Fiona Joy
